Looking to book a cheap wedding photographer, or ask a friend to do it for free? Read this first!
There is no blanket statement that one should never let a friend photograph their wedding. However, there are a few factors to consider before making this decision:
Skill level: Photography is a complex art, and just because someone is a friend doesn’t mean they have the skill or experience to properly capture the memories of a wedding.
Equipment: Professional photographers invest in high-quality equipment that is designed for the demands of wedding photography. If a friend doesn’t have access to professional gear, the images may not meet expectations, this is especially true in bad weather when non-professional cameras and lenses that are not weather-sealed are likely to stop working!
Reliability: Weddings can be unpredictable, and it’s important to have a photographer who is reliable and prepared for anything. A friend may not have the same level of commitment as a professional photographer. Each year we receive at least five late enquiries from couples whose friend/family member has got cold feet and decided not to photograph their wedding afterall. This is jeopardising your friendship and chance of hiring someone decent to capture your day; stress you really don’t need.
Professionalism: Professional photographers have a level of experience and professionalism that allows them to handle challenging situations, such as bad weather, timings going array or difficult family members, in a calm and effective manner. We also know how to work with other suppliers to ensure every element of your day is perfect and stress-free.
Ultimately, the decision to hire a professional photographer or ask a friend to take photos of a wedding should be based on what is most important to the couple. If capturing high-quality, reliable, and professional images of their special day is a priority, they may want to consider hiring a professional
